Contracting and web work in West Bonner County

Priest River and Oldtown sit essentially next to each other, a couple of minutes apart on Highway 2, with Oldtown running right up against the Washington line and the town of Newport on the far side of it. Between them they hold a few thousand people.

Splitting that into separate pages, each saying roughly the same thing with a different town name at the top, would be padding. It would not tell you anything, and pages built that way are exactly what search engines have spent years learning to discount. Buildings get repaired rather than replaced, additions do not always match what they were added to, and the original construction may predate anything written down.

Housing is more varied too. Older stick-built homes, manufactured and modular homes, cabins, and places that started as one thing and became another. Each carries its own quirks, and a contractor who only ever works on tract housing tends to be uncomfortable with all of them.

Distances also change the economics. Properties are further apart, and there are fewer trades working out here than there are in the Coeur d'Alene corridor, which means less competition for the small jobs but also fewer people to call. Booking work as a planned visit, and grouping several items into one trip, is how it is done sensibly.

Rural property owners are generally capable people. If you live out here you probably already handle a good deal of your own maintenance, and you are not looking for someone to do things you could do on a Saturday.

What is worth calling about is the part that needs a tool you do not own, a second person, a specific license, or the experience to tell whether something is cosmetic or structural. Electrical faults you would rather not guess at. HVAC that needs diagnosing, which here is service and repair only, never installation. Tractor work. Hauling. A structural repair you could attempt but would rather have done properly once.

There is no minimum-callout theatre attached to that, and no attempt to talk a small job into a large one. If you tell me what you have already tried, that saves both of us repeating it.

Businesses out here are often one person and a phone number: firewood, excavation, small engine repair, hauling, feed and tack, cleaning, a shop on Highway 2. For a business like that, an expensive website is not an investment, it is an overhead that eats a slow month.

What such a business actually needs is modest and specific. To exist on Google at all, rather than being findable only by people who already know the name. To look like a real operation rather than an abandoned page. To be reachable in one tap from a phone. To say plainly what is offered and how far out you will travel.
