Where Protean Hollow works
One operator, one truck, and a fixed idea of how far that truck should go. This page is the honest answer to "do you come out here," and to the question underneath it, which is whether you are going to be the job at the far end of a long drive that never quite gets scheduled.
Not everything travels the same distance
Protean Hollow does three different kinds of work, and they do not have the same reach. Pretending otherwise would waste your time and mine.
Contracting and repair
On site, two countiesCarpentry, decking and fencing, painting, flooring, electrical, HVAC service and repair, landscaping, hauling, and tractor work. This is the one that needs a truck and a day, so it stays inside Kootenai and Bonner Counties. Anything that needs a permit or a specialty license gets scoped in the estimate before it starts.
See contracting services →3D printing and fabrication
Local, and ships anywhereCustom and replacement parts printed to fit. Measuring an odd part in person is easier locally, but a photo and a caliper reading works from anywhere, and finished parts go out by mail. The shop already sends orders across the country.

Local or fully remoteNothing about building a website requires standing in your shop. Local clients get an in-person sit-down because it is easier; everyone else gets a phone call and email, which is how most of this work runs anyway. Distance is not a factor in the price.
See website work →Communities covered

How far out you are
Rough driving time from Spirit Lake. It is not a price list and there is no surcharge attached to it, but it is honest about which jobs are easy to fit into a week and which ones need planning.
- Under 20 min The near ringRathdrum, Athol, Twin Lakes, Blanchard, Hauser, Bayview. Small jobs and callbacks fit here without rearranging anything.
- 20 to 45 min The Coeur d'Alene corridor and West BonnerCoeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, Hayden Lake, Dalton Gardens, Priest River, Oldtown, Sagle. The bulk of the work, and where most weeks are spent.
- 45 to 75 min Sandpoint and the south countySandpoint, Ponderay, Dover, Kootenai, Cocolalla, Careywood, Harrison, Worley. Worth a trip, generally booked as a full day rather than an hour.
- Over 75 min The far edgesClark Fork, Hope, East Hope, Coolin, Priest Lake. Still in Bonner County and still covered, but call early. These get scheduled around, not squeezed in.
Questions about coverage
My town is not on the list. Do you still come out?
If it is in Kootenai County or Bonner County, yes. The lists above name every incorporated city, but most of North Idaho is unincorporated and those addresses are covered the same way. Call and give me a cross street.
Do you work outside those two counties?
It depends which service. Website and software work is taken on anywhere, because none of it requires being in the room. Printed and machined parts ship anywhere in the United States. On-site contracting and repair stays inside the two counties, because a contractor who is three hours away is a contractor who does not show up.
Are you actually in Spirit Lake, or is that just an address?
Actually in Spirit Lake. Protean Hollow LLC is registered in Idaho and the shop is here. Spirit Lake sits close to the Kootenai and Bonner county line, which is the practical reason both counties are covered from one place rather than one county being an afterthought.
Do you charge extra for the drive?
Any travel-related cost that applies will be discussed before work begins and reflected in the estimate.
Can you build my website if I am not in Idaho?
Yes. Website and software clients are handled by phone and email regardless of where they are, and the price does not change with distance. The trades background is the reason most of these clients get in touch, and that translates well past the state line.
Not sure if you are in range?
Call and ask. It takes thirty seconds and you get a straight answer either way, including "that one is too far for me, here is who I would call."
